Toyota and Lexus vehicle produced between 1997 and 2018 were fitted with  Takata airbags on various models. These airbags may pose a serious safety risk. In a frontal collision, the front airbag inflator can rupture, potentially causing severe injury or death. This issue affects several vehicles manufacturers worldwide fitted with Takata airbags.

Finding Your VIN/Frame Number

In most Toyota vehicles, you can find your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the passenger door pillar.

How to Scan Your VIN/Frame Number

  1. Open the Takata Airbag Recall Checker on your mobile phone. 
  2. Select Scan VIN/Frame number. 
  3. Switch to your front camera by clicking the button in the top-left of the frame. 
  4. Take an image of your VIN/Frame number and wait a few seconds for the system to highlight the numbers. 
  5. Select the VIN/Frame number, and this will auto-populate the number in the search bar below. 
  6. Click on the magnifying glass to check your vehicle. 
  7. If the vehicle has an outstanding Takata recall, contact your local Toyota dealer to arrange a free repair as soon as possible. 

About the Takata Airbag Recall Campaign

The Takata Airbag Recall Campaign is one of the largest automotive safety recalls in history, affecting millions of vehicles across numerous manufacturers worldwide.

The recall was initiated after it was identified that certain Takata airbag inflators could deteriorate over time, particularly following prolonged exposure to heat and humidity.

This deterioration can cause excessive pressure during airbag deployment, potentially resulting in the inflator rupturing and projecting metal fragments into the vehicle cabin, creating a risk of serious injury or death.

Vehicle manufacturers have therefore undertaken extensive recall campaigns to identify affected vehicles and replace the relevant airbag inflators free of charge.

Use our recall checker tool by inputting a vehicle's VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). For Japanese imports, you would require the Frame number.

Affected vehicles should have outstanding recall work completed through an authorised repairer as soon as possible.

The affected vehicles are equipped with Takata driver/and or passenger airbag(s) that contain a PSAN (phase-stabilised ammonium nitrate) gas generator without desiccant. According to Takata’s reports, a vehicle safety-related defect can occur in the airbags due to degradation of the gas generator (the airbag’s propulsion product) in the event of an accident.

 

What is the inflation device?

 

The inflation device is located within the airbag. It contains a solid gas generator (the airbag propulsion product) that ignites if an airbag deployment is required. When ignited, the fuel expands into an inert gas, inflating the airbag.

No other checks will be carried out on your vehicle unless requested by you at the time of booking.

  • Contact your Toyota dealer to check and make an appointment as soon as possible.

In general, the intervention is relatively quick (often less than half a day). The actual time taken may vary based on vehicle model, your local dealer will advise at time of booking.

 

Replacement of Takata Air Bags is 100% provided by the manufacturer. No charge to the customer.

 

If your vehicle is affected, there is a serious risk to your safety, and that of your passengers in the even of a collision. We encourage all Toyota owners to check their vehicles for this outstanding campaign and seek repair as soon as possible if you are affected.

 

The campaign specifically targets certain types of Takata inflators (including desiccant-free ammonium nitrate inflators). Not all airbags are concerned, but identification by manufacture/VIN remains mandatory.

 

You should not assume your vehicle is unaffected/repaired. Please take immediate action to check your vehicle remains safe to drive.
