FAQs

A Battery Electric car has no Internal Combustion Engine and runs on electricity alone, with the battery powering one or more electric motors. Hybrids combine a traditional engine and an electric powertrain – usually a self-charging battery and an electric motor. In a Hybrid car the combustion engine, electric motor and battery work together. The electric motor boosts performance while also working as a generator to turn surplus energy from the combustion engine into electrical charge, reducing fuel consumption.

Our Battery Electric vehicles are built to the same high quality, durability and reliability standards as any other Toyota, and their batteries are engineered to last. The bZ Touring’s battery is warranty-protected against degradation to less than 70% of its original capacity for up to eight years or 160,000km, whichever comes first. It’s also covered against functional defects for five years or 100,000km and, for your peace of mind, regular EV health checks can extend that cover to up to 10 years or one million kilometres, whichever comes first.

Charging your electric vehicle is simple and convenient. Charge whenever it suits you: while you are at home, in public and workplace car parks, or on the go using the public rapid chargers across Europe. To charge your vehicle at home, you can use the supplied cable and a domestic power socket or use an installed home charger via Toyota HomeCharge, which will get your car charged from 10 to 80% within 5 hours* (11kW) Plug in overnight and wake up to a fully charged battery.

For quick charging on the go, the expanding network of more than 850,000 public chargers is available across Europe within the Toyota Charging Network. Using the rapid charger could have you topped up from 10 to 80% in 30 minutes.* Use our charging calculator to find out more.

*A charge from a 10% state of charge to 80% can be achieved in around 30 minutes with 150 kW DC, even at an outside temperature of -10°C with battery preconditioning activated 40 min before charging.

Use battery preconditioning to reduce (DC) fast charging time. Battery conditioning can be linked to navigation, it will activate when you select your charging station address as point of destination. You can also activate the battery preconditioning via a manual button on the Multimedia screen, or you can schedule it prior to departure.

There are three types of Hybrid vehicle; mild Hybrids, Hybrids and Plug-in Hybrids. Mild Hybrids only use one or more electric motors to supplement the engine during acceleration and cruising – they cannot power the car without the engine’s assistance. Hybrids allow for short spells of electric-only driving thanks to their more powerful electrical powertrains. Plug-in Hybrids work in the same way as Hybrids but with a higher capacity battery for greater performance and increased electric-only EV mode driving range.

The WLTP range figure is an estimate based on the WLTP (Worldwide harmonised Light vehicle Test Procedure) regulations. These are a global standard Toyota follows rigorously. Use range will deviate from the WLTP value when key factors, including speed, road surface, driving behaviour and ambient temperature, differ from those specified in the WLTP test cycle. Please consult our range calculator to anticipate your real-world range in specific conditions.

The actual electric range value of your vehicle will vary from these calculated values, since many factors have an influence on a car's electric range. Such factors include: selected grade, optional equipment and accessories fitted, driving style, speed, road conditions, terrain (e.g. incline and decline), traffic, vehicle condition, tyre type (summer/winter) and pressure, vehicle load, number of passengers, external temperature, battery temperature, etc.

Selecting the Eco Driving Mode will increase efficiency and maximise use range, as will activating the Auto Eco Mode for the heater. Consider turning off the air-conditioning when not required and remember the heated seats and steering wheel are a more efficient way of staying warm than turning up the heater. It’s also a good idea to pre-condition the cabin while the car is still on charge – you can do this via the MyToyota app or the car’s multimedia display.

Ensure your tyre pressures are correctly adjusted. Low pressures will reduce use range. Winter tyres also consume more electricity on dry roads than summer tyres. Carrying unnecessary weight will increase energy usage, so be sure to remove surplus items from the car. Finally, consider modifying your driving behaviour. Driving at a constant, moderate speed and avoiding unnecessary acceleration and braking will help you go further on a charge. When you do need to alter your speed, do so smoothly to decrease your energy usage.

The actual range of your vehicle depends on many factors like external temperature, your driving style and use of A/C.

Smart Charging offers a more intelligent and efficient method to charge your electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid. It allows you to control when and how your EV charges – In this way, Smart Charging aims to help you save money, use less energy, and reduce strain on the electricity grid.

To set up Smart Charging, you will need a Toyota or Lexus electric vehicle (EV) or plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV), your own Toyota or Lexus HomeCharge wallbox, and access to a home energy meter. The MyToyota app is also essential for setting up and managing this feature. We will review all details with you during the setup.

Smart Charging schedules are automatically calculated based on your preferences. You can set your departure time and battery level preferences, and the system will optimise charging for efficiency, ensuring your vehicle is ready when needed.

Smart Charging aims to optimise your vehicle's energy usage timing, shifting charging to when electricity is cheaper and more environmentally friendly. You can also reduce your home's overall energy consumption by setting a target state of charge below full capacity for times when you don't need 100% of your battery.

Smart Charging aims to lower home charging costs by optimising it according to your electricity tariff and preferences. It creates personalised schedules to shift charge times to the most cost-effective times, avoiding high evening peak prices.

Smart Charging can be enabled once you've added your vehicle and HomeCharge wallbox to the MyToyota app. Once enabled, simply provide details of your home energy tariff, the time you need your vehicle, and the desired charge level. Smart Charging then utilises this information to intelligently create personalised charging schedules aimed at minimising your charging costs while meeting your mobility preferences.

The savings that Smart Charging can generate may differ depending on your electricity tariff type and rate, your charging habits, and local regulations.

You can update your tariff at any time. Click on  battery status and go to "Smart Charging".  Select "Smart Charging Settings" and update your "Energy tariff" information.
Figures are provided for comparability purposes; only compare consumption and range figures with other cars tested to the same technical procedures. All vehicles are certified according to the World Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP). These figures may not reflect real life driving results. Options and accessories added may affect official consumption and range figures, car tax and 'on the road' price (pre-registration). Driving behaviour and other factors (such as road conditions, terrain, traffic, vehicle condition, tyre pressure, load, number of passengers, external temperature, battery temperature, battery state, etc.) will also have an influence on your final values. Find out more about WLTP: https://toyota.ie/discover-toyota/wltp or contact your local Toyota Centre.
