Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Hybrid, an early game-changer
Our transformation to electrification stems from our expertise of over 25 years as a pioneer and leader in hybrid electric technology.
  • Hybrid pioneer

We started to develop hybrid electric vehicles in the mid-1990s when Takeshi Uchiyamada led a team to develop a car for the 21st century. One which would reduce emissions of CO2 and other pollutants. It resulted in the launch of the Prius hybrid in 1997, and our overall hybrid range now includes 44 models. Our hybrids have helped transform the automotive market in Europe, where we are a leader in European CO2 emissions reduction.

  • HEVs’ contribution to CO2 reduction

Sales in Europe of our HEVs have passed the four million mark, and represent the majority of Toyota’s European sales mix. We offer a range of 18 different HEV models across the Toyota and Lexus brands. Our full hybrids have enabled us to consistently over-achieve EU CO2 targets. They provide customers with accessible low-emissions vehicles in regions that currently lack sufficient infrastructure for ZEVs. Hybrids will continue as a key contributor (along with BEVs, FCEVs and PHEVs) to our carbon neutrality strategy as we increase to 100% electrified sales in Western Europe by 2030.

  • Leader in Full Hybrid Technology

We have continuously refined our full hybrid technology, which adapts to the driving conditions to provide optimal efficiency. In urban driving our HEVs can drive up to 75% of the distance in zero emissions. Since the start, we have continually refined the core electrification technologies such as batteries, electric motors, inverters, regenerative brakes, and electronic control software. These components are common for all variants of electrified powertrains – HEV, BEV, FCEV, PHEV – and give us unique advantages in QDR (Quality, Durability, Reliability) as we expand our electrified range.

  • 5th Generation Hybrid System

We have continued to advance our hybrid technology as it can make a unique contribution to the transition to carbon neutrality. Hybrid is accessible, it’s practical, and it allows the customer to achieve immediate reductions in CO2. All without having to overcome any practical and behavioural barriers. We have introduced our 5th generation hybrid system, which focuses on further improving efficiency and drivability. It also reduces overall size and weight by using more compact components. This new hybrid system made its European debut in the Corolla Cross.
