The innovative Toyota C-HR Hybrid crossover

Discover Hybrid

Toyota has pioneered Hybrid technology for more than 25 years. Our Hybrid cars are enjoyed by millions of drivers on the road today. Toyota’s latest fifth-generation Hybrids combine an electric motor and a petrol engine in one best-of-both-worlds powertrain, delivering impressive performance and driving range.

Why Hybrid?

Refuel as usual

Refuelling a Hybrid car is easy. Top up your Toyota Hybrid with petrol at a filling station, as you would a conventional car.

Responsive and efficient

Toyota Hybrids seamlessly combine petrol and electric power to optimise efficiency and deliver smooth, responsive power. They drive much like a conventional car but can cover up to 42%§ of your driving distance and 56% of your driving time in electric-only EV mode§.

No Plugging In

Toyota Hybrids charge their batteries while braking and coasting. Together with their onboard combustion engine, this means you don’t need to worry about electric range or charging.

How do hybrid cars work?

Toyota’s Hybrids combine a combustion engine and electric power in one advanced powertrain. A battery and one or more electric motors boost performance while also working as a generator to turn surplus energy into electrical charge, reducing fuel consumption. The result is a smooth, efficient and enjoyable driving experience. To understand more, the animations below show how our Hybrids work.

Refuelling

Fill the tank with petrol at the pump as normal.

Electric driving

The battery powers one or more electric motors, turning the wheels and driving the vehicle forward.

Conventional driving

The combustion engine boosts power and range over long distances while also charging the battery.

Regenerative braking

When you brake and the vehicle decelerates, energy that would usually be lost during this process is used to top up the battery.

Connected Services

From checking the vehicle status and even pre-conditioning the cabin temperature, the MyToyota smartphone app helps you get the most out of your Toyota Hybrid.

FAQS

Hybrids feature a combustion engine and an electric powertrain. The two energy sources can be combined or used independently as required.

Hybrids run on electric power in some driving scenarios, such as when pulling away and during low-speed cruising. When the battery runs low, excess power from the engine charges it back up again.

Toyota Hybrids feature pioneering ◊ technology. They automatically recharge their batteries as you drive. With no additional charging required, there's no need to worry about range or plugging in.

◊ In a Hybrid a combustion engine and one or more electric motors work together in one advanced powertrain. The motor boosts performance while also working as a generator to turn surplus energy into electrical charge, reducing fuel consumption.

The pioneering battery technology in Toyota's Hybrid is engineered to last the lifetime of the car. In fact, some mechanical elements such as the clutch, alternator and starter motor are removed completely, further reducing the risk of unforeseen costs in the future. Not only that, all Hybrid components, including the battery, are covered by Toyota’s 5-year/100,000km** warranty from new. ** Whichever occurs sooner.

There are two types of Hybrid vehicles; Hybrids and Plug-in Hybrids. Hybrids allow for short spells of electric-only driving thanks to their more powerful electrical powertrains. Plug-in Hybrids work in the same way as Hybrids but with a higher capacity battery for greater performance and increased electric-only EV mode driving range.

* Combining the power of a highly-efficient petrol engine and one or more electric motors, Toyota Hybrids can charge themselves while you drive, slow down or brake. You can drive some distances in electric mode and never have to plug in or worry about battery range as the petrol engine takes over when the battery is empty.

§ Average percentage of real-life combined journeys spent in EV mode of around 117,196 Yaris Hybrid customers in the UK between 1st January 2023 and 30th June 2023. Total distance travelled by all drivers was around 155 million kilometers. Results from a variety of weather and driving conditions. Actual percentages may differ, depending on location, driving style, traffic, weather conditions and the particular vehicle model.

EV time and distance are calculated based on instantaneous fuel consumption < 0.001lt, with that value then divided by the total driving time or distance respectively. §§ An electrified car is one propelled by one or more electric motors to some extent. Some electrified cars, including Hybrids and Plug-in Hybrids, also have a petrol engine. Others, like the Toyota bZ4X, are entirely electric.
