Stop & Start

Specified with 1.33-litre Dual VVT-i petrol Yaris, Auris and Corolla models, and D-4D 90 (1.4) diesel, Stop & Start saves fuel and emissions in urban conditions by seamlessly stopping and restarting the engine at lights or in stationary traffic. This helps to boost combined fuel economy.

New Engines

Reduced weight, lower internal friction, optimised valve control and greater rigidity are just a few of the improvements present in Toyota Optimal Drive engines. These innovations are applied differently across each model, but every engine offers a significant boost in terms of fuel economy and emissions, without sacrifice in power.

Improved Transmission

The new 6-speed Manual transmission available with Yaris, Auris, Corolla, Avensis, Verso and Rav4 is a showcase for Toyota Optimal Drive thinking. Its unique twin-shaft design makes changing gear easier and more satisfying, and the reduced size and number of components improves efficiency and torque capacity.

Gearshift Indicator

An indicator system to help inform the driver of the optimal gear to get the most out of Toyota Optimal Drive powertrains, for the best balance between performance and economy.

How does it work?

The GSI consists of an information light that illuminates when input from the sensors monitoring the engine’s performance indicate that a change to a higher or lower gear would benefit economy, yet still retain adequate performance for the needs of day-to-day driving.

The system takes into account several driving conditions, including the level that the accelerator pedal is pressed and the vehicle speed. The Electronic Control Unit (ECU) then calculates the optimal gear shift points. Since the official fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are measured with pre-fixed gear shift points which are the same for every vehicle, GSI can help better these figures in real life. Because the driver has reliable information on the optimum gear change point, they can choose to drive economically, saving money and lowering emissions.
